Alopecia areata is a condition where the immune system mistakenly targets hair follicles, leading to hair loss. These follicles are the structures responsible for producing hair on the body, however, this condition primarily affects the scalp and face.

There appears to a slightly higher incidence of alopecia in the Down syndrome community so we have a Facebook group for parents to connect to share experiences, offer support and advice.
