Developing Vocabulary and Language in the early years
Children with Down syndrome often show a real strength in understanding words in their early years. This growing receptive vocabulary – the words a child understands – plays an important role in everyday communication, including how well they can follow instructions and take part in routines.
Expressive language – the words a child can say or sign, and how they begin to join words together – can take more time and support to develop.
This on-demand session focuses on both areas. It shares practical, easy-to-use activities to help build receptive and expressive vocabulary, support understanding of longer sentences, and encourage children to start putting words together into early phrases. Families and professionals can watch at their own pace and revisit the ideas whenever it’s helpful.
Our on-demand sessions give you access to a recording of our online Information Sharing Session ‘Developing Vocabulary and Language in the early years’. You will have access for 90 days from the date of sign up you can watch and re-watch the presentation. You will need to be a member of our PADS Parent Portal to access the recording – it’s free to sign-up and if you aren’t already a member you can join here.
We are keen for everyone in the UK to be able to access our information and support. We are offering payment options for our families – the standard cost to attend this session is £5, but we are offering some places at £2.50 for those who are able to contribute but not at the full rate and for anyone for whom finances would prohibit them attending, we are pleased to be able to offer a number of places at no charge. We do not require any evidence of income; we are a parent-led charity, and we trust our families. Please select an option in the box at the top right of the page to pay or register for free here.
